In the 4th century BC, the King of Persia employed a food taster, Nehemiah. Assassination by food poisoning was a serious concern during the Persian Empire, so food tasters were vital. Nehemiah was expected to try every cup of wine and sample each plate of food prior to the King being presented with his meal.

During the 17th century, fortune tellers noticed shapes were left in their cups after drinking tea and interpreted these patterns as prophecies for the future. I have been drinking tea for decades and have never received any useful tips from my beverages.

Sugar boost
In the 3rd century, while navigang between trading posts, boat-travelling merchants needed something to improve the taste of the awful food they had available. With limited resources, they created a fermented paste from fish parts and soybeans. They called this new recipe ‘koe-chep’, which in the local dialect meant ‘fish sauce’. Hundreds of years later, a Philadelphian scienst replaced the fish parts with tomatoes and vinegar, and the modern version of ketchup was born.

A Spanish Lesson

I knew a little about Keynes; he was an economic genius, he wrote a lot of books, and he died in 1946. A Wonderful Ride
Without traffic my house is 30 minutes from downtown Toronto. During rush hour this balloons to at least 90 minutes. For this reason, I seldom make it into the downtown core anymore. When I absolutely have to be downtown, I typically leave my house early in the morning, and try to leave the city before rush hour.
